This is another Logo design update for my own personal use as a PHASEgaming logo, above we have each stage in images of my progress of logo design. The original was just a quick sketch in my notebook on logo ideas, which i did multiple designs of but that particular one i felt i could develop the most on. The 2nd image is the massive improvement on the first design on my logo using the new two-tone pad which allows me to use a white gel pen and pencil to show light as well as a black faber castel pencil to show dark shadows alongside normal pencil shading techniques (original blog, progress logo design v2 blog). I left my last post with this little target for myself:
“Now I will progress upon that in both sketches and features of the dragon. Possibly I might design separate pieces of the dragon in different designs to see which looks the best/ works better for the dragon, this could add to the design process substantially. Also I will try go into Photoshop as I learn a little bit about it in a lesson, which will give me a digital more logo version of the graphic.”- Jason Pook targets for logo progress.
Whilst I continue through a design process for my individual parts of the dragon i decided i should test my Photoshop skills from what i have learnt so far in class and previous use of the program.
This is the first layer I started on when Photoshopping my original image of the PHASEgaming logo, the idea was to have a yellow dragon, with matching text colour and chained lightning from text to text. So the way i went about doing this was obviously to first create a new layer for this colouring then to select a paint brush of a rough size and color over the dragon as much as a could it didn’t matter too much if i went over the edges due to the next step i would use. With a very bold and now unable to see dragon i needed to use the multiply on the layer, the multiply layer selection allows the layer below to show up over the top of the current layer (it will blend colour together if two overlap). Then i wanted to use a very thin white paint brush to do round certain edges of the dragon that i had previously done in gel pen on my sketch including the horns, spikes and claws. With this coming along nicely and out of the way i thought “its an electric flying dragon would it be awesome if a lighting bolt was going off behind it” so i roughly outlined a lighting bolt in white so i could add to it later on behind the dragon.
This is then the second layer i chose to undertake which was to give the dragon a second colour in certain areas to attempt to show light and also make it slightly more 3D. What i did with this was very simple i actually got a brush tool and chose the colour black (yes its orange but i will get there) set the brush tool to the selected size i wanted of 50px and outlined certain areas around my dragon, with it looking very dark and unprofessional i changed the layer to have the effect of “soft light” on it this changed it from black to orange but still with the same opacity and glow to the dragon as before. A slight use of the burn tool was used after this on some edges like under the wing muscles to add more darkness/definition.
For this 3rd layer i decided to improve on the electric effect of the dragon breathing lighting. To do this i had to colour it in roughly in orange much similar to the dragons colour and the PHASEgaming text this i though would add a nice sort of chain effect to the overall image. Once i had coloured it in orange it wasn’t too sure on the appearance i multiplied the blending of the layer but it still wasn’t looking right so i experimented with it a bit on different settings of blending layers until i came to “Divide” this layer turned my lighting a bright electric blue which looked awesome as it was stand out from the rest as well as adding a glow around the PHASEgaming text i have so really i stumbled across this technique and it paid off from experimental Photoshop.
This layer was to start to come to end the Photoshop of the logo. I began on colouring the background as a dark blue like a night sky which would perfectly help my lightning especially to stand out from the rest. All i did for this is colour the background in completely over the top of everything and then hit the multiple blending layer setting again to put everything else back on top of this layer to create me a night sky for my dragon to fly around in. This lead onto the electric behind the dragon it could not be the same colour as the dragon electric breathe otherwise it would divert the viewers eye from the name which is the purpose of a logo. This made me match it to the dragon original colour and the text of a yellow colour but not too bright and it worked nicely i thought, i did try multiple different colours as the lightning could be anything i wanted it to be really from pink to pure white but yellow seemed to fit the best of the bunch i tried. But the problem was when i filled it in with the paint bucket it chained onto the the horns and spikes which then was yellow but obviously i still wanted the yellow bolt so i addressed this problem on the next layer coming up. One thing i noticed was the background made the glow around the lightning and text a little more subtle blue rather than super blue which i liked and kept. I then added this blue colour to certain parts of the background lightning bolt to add a 3D effect as well as a black line for the darker sides to enhance 3D further.
Finally i topped it all off by defining everything with white and black paint brushes on a really small thin brush size, i did it for the top left of most of the picture as if the light source was in the top left so this allowed me to add black to all the shadowed areas in attempt to enhance the 3D visual of the image, as before nothing really stood out apart from the lightning which seemed to overwhelm the text. The text was the next thing i took to doing again as it was just lost in the image so i added a electric yellow so it really stood out which is the intention of a logo for the name to draw you in, also the transition from electric blue to electric yellow lightning was a cool idea i thought. With the eye now electric blue the same colour as the lightning as i wanted the eye to be related to the colour of the lightning of the dragon as if its coming from the soul which is electric blue for this dragon. To finish it off the whitened teeth, horns, spikes and claws were re-installed from the previous problem of going yellow when i filled in the background electric bolt. Finally a did some speckles around the screen to represent starts which started out as dots of white paint brush and it didn’t really work for me so i got the smudge tool to smudge it in 4 directions to symbolise the shine and sparkle of stars to good effect.
This concluded my Photoshop work for my logo PHASEgaming design i felt i have really tried to use my current Photoshop skills to the maximum using things like blending layers for different effects and certain tools like smudge and burn to make the image be tailored to my own personal views of shading and effects. Please comment on what you think i will be doing more progress on this idea as it always has room for improvement although it has come on leaps and bounds since the original sketch.
